Making Money Quickly

Marc Hedlund, co-founder and former CEO of personal finance company Wesabe, has penned a refreshingly honest and open take on why he thinks the startup lost to rival Mint.

The latter launched later than Wesabe (and won the top prize at the TechCrunch40 conference back in 2007) and was later acquired by Intuit for $170 million, while Wesabe had a less stellar exit and hit the deadpool last June.

Hedlund takes the blame, but also counters some of the things that have been cited as reasons for Wesabe’s demise for being myths, such as the fact that Mint was first to market, that the company wasn’t making any money and that it boasted an inferior name and design.

An excerpt:

I am, of course, enormously sad that Wesabe lost and the company closed. I don’t agree with those who say you should learn from your successes and mostly ignore your failures; nor do I agree with those who obsess over failures for years after (as I have done in the past). I’m hoping that by writing this all out I can offload it from my head and hopefully help inform other people who try to start companies in the future.

You’ll hear a lot about why company A won and company B lost in any market, and in my experience, a lot of the theories thrown about — even or especially by the participants — are utter crap. A domain name doesn’t win you a market; launching second or fifth or tenth doesn’t lose you a market. You can’t blame your competitors or your board or the lack of or excess of investment.

Focus on what really matters: making users happy with your product as quickly as you can, and helping them as much as you can after that. If you do those better than anyone else out there you’ll win.

What we’ve got here, ladies and gentlemen, is a must-read.

Good discussion about the post over at Hacker News.

Enough with Facebook and Twitter. I admit that I use them; they’re good business billboards. But people, I just don’t care if you got a tatt, or how proud you are that your kid won the spelling bee, or even if your kid got a tatt. I really don’t. Let’s face it: Social media are quickly becoming passe, sort of like anything “green” or “organic.”

The time has come for anti-social media. It’s time for ” Hellbook.”

This is where we can go when we want to tell others where to go. It’s the best hope for the misanthrope. Kinda brings tears to you eyes, doesn’t it? That’s the idea.

This is where we fend off all the irritating people in our lives. Here, we can “Fend” everyone we simply want to leave us alone and place them on our very own Diss List. There are so many possibilities.

Maybe we could have a special place in Hellbook for the sadists who bombard us with robocalls and distorted campaign ads that play at much higher volume than the TV program we’re trying to watch. How about a secret section for this country’s shady oligarchs, who brought down the economy and are now making huge campaign contributions so they can buy more of the government?

They would rate a special place that would really light up with each disclosure about how these very same culprits faked the documents needed to throw unfortunate homeowners and their families out on the street. Maybe we can include these supreme scoundrels’ names and addresses, with maps to their gated communities.

We could send messages that would be far shorter than Twitter’s 140 characters. Rahm Emmanuel would have a field day. Of course, he also might be on quite a few of the lists. So would all the pipsqueak political demagogues on both sides of the fence, the ones that pollute the waters with their simple-minded fearmongering and bigotry. Without a doubt, politicians would be among the most popular of the unpopular.

Special dishonors could go to the officeholders and wannabes who have staffers ghostwrite posts on Facebook and Twitter in an effort to look hip and trendy.

How dumb is that? It defies logic. If they were hip and trendy they wouldn’t be politicians, now would they?

That site could be divided in half. On the right, imagine all the Fends a Sarah Palin (she would call them “Haters”–accurately), Newt Gingrich or Glenn Beck would have. I’d probably want to stay away from Christine O’Donnell, though. (Do we really know for sure that she only dabbled in witchcraft?)

Keith Olbermann would be way high on the left, no doubt about it. Personally, my site would be crammed with those from fringe to slimy fringe. It would be a dumping ground for those who come up with relentless, cheap shot political arguments: The author of “Do you want a bureaucrat between you and your doctor” would get high dishonors. Same for the one responsible for “Change you can believe in.” The beauty of this is that those who simply get on our nerves would have a place on this hit parade.

I’ve given a lot of thought to this. The racists, homophobes, and the GOP candidate for New York Governor would not be welcome as members. Nor would those religious intolerants that babble inanities about Sharia law in the United States and other spittle. They can only be targets, not members. This was a genuinely tough decision, because there’s a huge amount of money to be made from Tea Party members alone.

Obviously, there would need to be an App, which means someone will have to come up with a graphic. I can think of one—but this should probably be a family site. Imagine how much fun you and the children can have as you teach them the pure joy of trashing other people. Come to think of it, with what goes on in their schools, maybe they could teach us a thing or two.

For those who suffer from self doubt, you could list yourself to put down along with those Fends who should lack self esteem.

The idea would spread like wildfire. In fact, “May You Burn in Hellbook” could be the slogan. Wouldn’t this make a wonderful movie? We could call it The Hate Locker. Actually, scratch that. A movie about a website is an absurd idea.

Even so, the time is definitely right for Hellbook. It would be a natural winner—a loser’s winner. After all, everybody would be a villain.

Finally, a website that reflects real life. If you like the idea, let me know. Just send me a response, two words or more. You can reach me at Facebook or Twitter.

Making money from blogging is a dream that many people have. This objective is not at all unattainable even if you are someone with just basic writing skills. In fact, becoming a blogger doesn't necessarily mean you have to be a very good writer. It just requires a creative mind set, some consistency and the willingness to work hard. But even though blogging is something that just about anyone can do - not many people have managed to turn blogging into profit.

Most of the people who fail to earn any money from their blogs often fail because of two reasons. They may have had too high of an expectation of how quickly their reader base would grow, and how fast they would be able to start generating profit. When those expectations don't go according to plan, it often kills their motivation to continue blogging, and cause them to give up out of being disappointed.

Another thing that causes a lot of bloggers to windup crashing into the brick wall of frustration - is the lack of proper planning. The key to becoming a successful blogger is to set realistic goals and then patiently start working towards those goals.

In order to start generating earnings from your blog, you will need to drive enough traffic to the content of your site. The greater the amount of traffic you are able to direct, the more chance you will have of getting advertisers to pay you to promoting their ads on your blog. And of course, generating that much traffic is not an easy task - it requires hard work.

There are tons of other sites on the internet and a lot of new ones go up each day. So in order for your site to be found... it's not enough to just focus on the quantity, and the quality of your blog post. You have to use some of the time spent adding content to your site to promote it, so you can start getting the sort of traffic that will earn you money.

It is in fact very important that you consistently update your blog with fresh content. This will ensure you have posts that are frequently indexed into search engines, so your site can continuously receive a steady flow of search engine traffic. But you just have to balance between adding content and promoting your site.

Another great benefit you'll get from constantly updating your blog... it causes you to form a relationship with your readers. And believe you me, if you keep adding quality content to your blog, your readers will always keep coming back each time there is a fresh update to your site.

So if your aim is to start generating earnings from your blog, start by getting to work and do whatever is necessary to attract visitors to your site. Take different promotional steps such as joining blogging communities... get familiarized with other bloggers from those communities. This is so you can exchange links with other bloggers which will help to improve your site's ranking.

It doesn't matter how much internet marketing experience you may have, or how brilliant of an idea you might have for blogging - don't expect to start making money overnight! The process of acquiring the type of reader base that will turn into profit will take time, and requires patience.

So be realistic, don't expect anything significant until after a couple of months of hard work. And don't be deterred when things take a while to take off. Try to maintain your focus and stick to the task of improving and promoting your blog even during those dry spells. Set realistic short term goals and work towards fulfilling them. Eventually if you keep your focus on the goals you have set; your persistence will pay off and cause you to start making money from blogging.

Making Easy Money

A week ago we posted Dave Friedman's insightful piece on "Why We Must Care About Shadow Banking" as shadow banking, whose shadow liabilities comprises the bulk of the unreported M3, represents a critical component of the credit system. Today, we present the second part in this three part series for all who wish to get up to speed with some of the key issues in this most critical topic.

Submitted by Dave Friedman of Wall St. Cheat Sheet

Shadow Banking Part II: Why You MUST Care

I recently blogged
about the origins of the shadow banking system. This is the second
blog post in that series, which discusses in more detail why the average
investor should care about shadow banking. The third post in this
series will discuss proposed regulatory reforms that address shadow
banking.

In short, shadow banking is the largely unregulated component of the
banking sector. The shadow banking system is a source of funding and
liquidity for non-bank financial institutions. What is a non-bank
financial institution? Well, it can be any large institution (a
corporation, a pension fund, a very wealthy individual, etc.) that has a
large cash balance.  These institutions have a large asset, cash,
sitting on their balance sheet.  It is both a source of liquidity for
the institution, and a source of return, assuming that the cash can be
invested safely. So, for example, say Microsoft is sitting on $10
billion in cash. It can deposit the cash with a financial intermediary,
such as the now-defunct Bear Stearns, in exchange for collateral of
short-term debt instruments, and so earn a return on its liquid asset.

At its heart, this is the shadow banking system: it is a funding and
liquidity source provided by non-banks, and it arose because entities
with large piles of cash needed to manage that asset in some manner that
generated a return.

(As a side note, there are a number of very good posts on the shadow banking system at Zero Hedge. See here, here, here, and here.)

So, going back to the paper from the previous post,
why should we care about the shadow banking system at this juncture?
After all, a reasonable person would point out that the Dodd-Frank bill
contains many regulatory reforms. But, as the authors point out,
“hree important gaps [in the Dodd-Frank bill] are in money-market
mutual funds (MMMFs), securitization, and repurchase transactions
(‘repo’).” These are the three parts of the shadow banking system.
Recall from the previous post that money market funds were created when
“cash-rich non-financial companies did not have easy access to safe,
interest-earning, short-term investments.”

So, we have a situation in which companies and other institutions
laden with cash needed a way to earn money on those stockpiles, but they
didn’t want to do so by depositing the cash with a traditional bank.
Traditional bank deposits are insured only to $100,000 (though this has since been changed to $250,000),
which is far too small a balance for institutions with hundreds of
millions, or even billions, of dollars of cash on their balance sheet.
Since the regulated market did not provide a solution, the private
market did, in the form of money market mutual funds, off-balance-sheet
securitizations, and the repo market.

But, because no bank could afford to serve as a backstop to the
shadow banking system, in the midst of the crisis, the US government,
and other sovereign governments, had to step into the breech and act as a
de facto backstop to this unregulated system of liquidity and
funding. But, once governments accepted this role, they provided an
implicit, if not explicit, guarantee of the shadow banking system. In
the short term, this was likely necessary, in order for non-financial
entities to continue to operate, be able to pay their employees, etc.
But in the longer term, the implications of making an implicit guarantee
on an un-regulated banking system are unclear. The third and final
post in this series will explore one regulatory proposal, called narrow-funding banks, to deal with this mess in the future.

This is a Recap of Boardwalk Empire Episode 2, “The Ivory Tower”, originally airing September 26, 2010. If you thought the first episode was Olde Timey Gangstery, then hoo boy, you were correct in that evaluation.

Episode 2 of the ‘Walks picks up with Nucky getting a visit from the resident prohibition agent, the joyless, no-nonsense, no-sympathies, yes-hat Agent Van Alden:

Live-Action Rex Banner isn’t buying Nucky’s explanation that Hans Schroder, the baker’s assistant with one minor arrest 10 years ago, mastermined the previous week’s gangster mass-murder, and shrugs off Nucky’s shady offer to speak with the sheriff, Brother McIncahoots. We find out later that the agent isn’t just mad at Nucky but also generally joyless, evidenced when he writes this unromantic letter to his wife:

Van Alden returns to his supervisor with the series-establishing line that compared to Arnold Rothstein, Nucky Thompson is the “much bigger fish.” Congratulations – you watched the opening credits.

After the jump, Al Capone beats a reporter, then some not the most famous gangster ever gangsters do some other gangster stuff:

Meanwhile in Chicago, we open on the giant funeral procession for Big Jim Colosimo, the gangster who got shot in the face last episode for playing a record real loud. Press agents hound the pallbearers asking Johnny Torrio if he was involved in the murder, and I don’t know who he is because seriously this show has like ninety characters right now. But his companion, Al Capone — easy to remember! — shrugs the reporters off all Al-Caponelike.

Later, a reporter comes to Capone in a speakeasy asking him to give a statement about the murder, and Al gives him the statement “Hey I am hitting you with this bottle”:

Having Al Capone in the show really helps things, because he’s super famous and you never forget which character he is. Every character should be someone really famous. Jimmy? He should be Teddy Roosevelt. Rothstein should be Charlie Chaplin. And Margaret is Abe Lincoln. Not should be – she is Abe Lincoln. That’s the subtext I got from this episode. Just wait a few more weeks, it’ll be revealed.

Speaking of Rothstein, he’s surprisingly uncool with Nucky stealing his own liquor shipment and selling it to Chicago, and demands $100,000 to cover the damages, which in the 20s was literally 9 trillion dollars. Nucky’s like “Go buzz off like Ruth Buzzi!” That was the most vulgar insult back then.

Rothstein takes his frustration out by interrogating the guy who shot Big Jim with a really badass story about making a dude choke to death on a cue ball. But my guess is he’s gonna let the murder slide and let the 100 grand slide then go buy a slip n’ slide and slide down it.

Margaret is recovering in the hospital by reading Henry James’ The Ivory Tower — titular line! — and gets a visit from Nucky’s brother Eli, who shadily gives her money to ensure that she won’t deny her husband’s involvement in the gang shooting:

In other financial matters, Nucky demands that Jimmy pay him the $3,000 from his share that he was shorted. Sidenote: Gangsters are always shorting each other money, aren’t they? Here’s my impression of a gangster: “You shorted me, where’s my money, see? I’m a gangster!” That line was originally gonna be the title of this show.

Jimmy gets the money by selling his mother’s necklace that he was originally gonna give as a gift to a showgirl [Correction: That showgirl WAS his mother - thanks, commenters!] — seriously, so many humans filmed in this thing — and hands the cash to Nucky, who immediately loses the whole amount on one roulette spin. Burn! Gonna take Jimmy a lot of Fatty Arbuckle watching to get over that one.

Also, Jimmy and his wife are having sex and their kid is right next to them and wakes up. Zuh?

In general, pretty solid second episode of the ‘Walks (gonna keep calling it that because it sounds so uncool), even if it was basically a “react to stuff last week, set up stuff for coming weeks” transition episode, and not a traditional television “things happening” episode. I dealt with Lost for like 15 years, these things don’t bother me anymore; it’s like once you’ve been on a 14 hour flight, you no longer get restless on 5 hour flights. Especially if those flights crash and cause time mysteries.

Much has been made over Steve Buscemi’s role in this series — my colleague Alex Zalben called him the show’s central problem – but I’m still torn on the casting decision. On one hand, it’s a different role for Buscemi, and his alternately reserved and passionate demeanor is both unpredictable and interesting, if a bit uneven. On the other hand, though, part of me wishes HBO had gone with a semi-newcomer in the lead role, giving someone the chance to really inherit the role independently of their own notoriety, like James Gandolfini in The Sopranos, Ian McShane in Deadwood, or Mrs. Blankenship in Mad Men. Or just straight up given the role to Mrs. Blankenship.

That about wraps up the recap for this week. Oh also, some boardwalk guy was trying to sleep with a 19-year-old and she finally was giving him an HJ in the car and  a dying guy stumbled onto the road and scared them. Also, Nucky is giving Mickey Doyle’s business to Chalky White, because his name is even more olde timey. Also the prohibition agent stole Margaret’s ribbon and was sniffing it.

…The f*ck?

Making Fast Money

Considering how hard Rolling Stone worked to make Barack Obama look good in their recent interview, it’s a pity they couldn’t bring themselves to cut the embarrassing “final thoughts” he insisted on appending:

One closing remark that I want to make: It is inexcusable for any Democrat or progressive right now to stand on the sidelines in this midterm election. There may be complaints about us not having gotten certain things done, not fast enough, making certain legislative compromises. But right now, we’ve got a choice between a Republican Party that has moved to the right of George Bush and is looking to lock in the same policies that got us into these disasters in the first place, versus an administration that, with some admitted warts, has been the most successful administration in a generation in moving progressive agendas forward.

The idea that we’ve got a lack of enthusiasm in the Democratic base, that people are sitting on their hands complaining, is just irresponsible.

Everybody out there has to be thinking about what’s at stake in this election and if they want to move forward over the next two years or six years or 10 years on key issues like climate change, key issues like how we restore a sense of equity and optimism to middle-class families who have seen their incomes decline by five percent over the last decade. If we want the kind of country that respects civil rights and civil liberties, we’d better fight in this election. And right now, we are getting outspent eight to one by these 527s that the Roberts court says can spend with impunity without disclosing where their money’s coming from. In every single one of these congressional districts, you are seeing these independent organizations outspend political parties and the candidates by, as I said, factors of four to one, five to one, eight to one, 10 to one.

Even by the standards of overheated political rhetoric, this is remarkably silly.  Beyond the questionable tactic of motivating his base by insulting them as irresponsible crybabies, take another look at the stakes Obama lays out in that last paragraph.  He wants to “move forward” on the ridiculous climate-change fraud?  Note to the President: It’s over. The con artists got busted.  The country you left swimming in debt will not suffer another dime of its money to be confiscated for the benefit of global-warming carnival hustlers.  The great bid to frighten Americans into handing over control of their lives to a junk-science religious cult has failed.

How do we “restore a sense of equity and optimism to middle-class families?”  I know!  Let’s blow their jobs away and bankrupt their children with a poorly thought out socialized medicine scheme!

The President saves the best for last.  Democrats have to “fight in this election” if they “want the kind of country that respects civil rights and civil liberties.”  That’s the real agenda of the Tea Party movement, all right: reinstating slavery.

Of course, if you translate the President’s remarks from Leftspeak, you’ll see that by “civil rights” he means vast government spending programs and politicized “justice” of the Eric Holder variety.  Besides encrypting their real agenda to lure in “moderates,” the Left loves this kind of language because it lets them pretend to be heroic crusaders against absolute evil.  Every progressive voter sees himself lunging from the shadows and throwing Batarangs into the faces of surprised Klansmen.

The same fantasies fuel the ravings of NAACP chairman Ben Jealous, who has squandered the last of his organization’s credibility to hang a bucket of racist paint over a door the Tea Party will never walk through.  The NAACP purchases influence by performing certain services for the Democrat Party.  They’ve been unable to carry out their mission this year.  The impending defeat of his patrons has driven Jealous to muttering about Kristallnacht.

Hopefully the Tea Party women will remember to wear burqas over their jackboots, lest they provoke the righteous fury of Taliban Dan.  Alan Grayson’s slanderous ad campaign is merely the terminal point on a line of hysteria, stretching from Obama’s dire warnings about the end of civil rights, through Jealous and his delirious tiptoe through nights of broken glass.  It’s the same strategy, executed less gracefully.  Grayson is the eager but dimwitted kid who lights his jack-o-lantern with a stick of dynamite so it will glow extra bright.  The guy who runs his favorite Web site helped him carve the pumpkin.

Everywhere you look this election season, the sales pitch is the same: it’s Democrats or the Devil.  The Party and its President claim the moral and intellectual strength to run every aspect of our lives, and confiscate limitless amounts our income… but they won’t explain or defend their actions, because we can’t handle the truth.  Instead, they campaign by assuring us their opponents are monsters.  If I were one of their voters, I would tire of being treated like an idiot, and wonder why a Party full of geniuses can’t make a single rational appeal.

Clearly the plot of these Fast & Furious movies aren’t all that important and certainly aren’t what fans flock to the theaters for. But all movies need a plot and we finally get a look at the official one for Fast Five today.

Take a look at the official synopsis for below:

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead a reunion of returning all-stars from every chapter of the explosive franchise built on speed in Fast Five. In this installment, former cop Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. Dwayne Johnson joins returning favorites Jordana Brewster, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for this ultimate high-stakes race.

Since Brian and Mia Toretto (Brewster) broke Dom out of custody, they’ve blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he’s not the only one on their tail.

Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can’t separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey…before someone else runs them down first.

Maybe it’s not the most imaginative plot in the world, but at least it’s taking things in an interesting direction. I really dig the addition of Dwayne Johnson as an agent who apparently never fails at his job (he looks badass in the set photos we posted last month).

Making Money Through

A California man who helped funnel stolen cash to a global network of hackers and carders was sentenced Thursday to 6 years in prison for conspiracy to launder money.

Cesar Carranza, 38, also known as “uBuyWeRush,” ran a legitimate business selling liquidation and overstock merchandise online and from three California stores.

But, according to an indictment (.pdf), he also sold MSR-206’s to carders to encode stolen bank card data onto blank cards, and he served as a conduit to transmit stolen money between mules and carders.

He worked with many of the top carders in the criminal underground between 2003 and 2006, including Maksim “Maksik” Yastremskiy, a Ukrainian carder who allegedly worked with TJX hacker Albert Gonzalez and was considered by authorities to be one of the top sellers of stolen card data on the internet.

In 2003 and 2004, Carranza became an approved and trusted vendor on online criminal forums such as CarderPlanet and Shadowcrew, advertising his goods and services and dispensing advice on the best tools to use for various criminal endeavors.

According to court records, he admitted in messages he posted to the forums that he himself had done carding between 1990 and 1998, but retired to become a vendor for other carders.

“I decided to supply all you guys making the real big bucks,” he allegedly wrote. “So if you need me I sell Card Printers, Card Embossers, Tippers, Encoders, Small Readers and more.”

He was first arrested in California in 2004, but was never charged with a crime. Although he was selling MSR-206s through eBay at the time, selling the devices is not illegal. Carranza told Threat Level, however, that police accused him of selling his merchandise to terrorists.

He subsequently sold off his MSR business. But, according to court records, his services as a money launderer for carders continued to flourish, even though it was clear that law enforcement agencies were closely watching him.

Hackers in East Europe and elsewhere would steal credit and debit card numbers and PINs through phishing and other means, then pass the data to so-called mules in the U.S., who would encode the numbers onto the magnetic stripe of blank cards, then use the cards to withdraw money from the accounts at ATMs. They would then send the money back to their co-conspirators in East Europe through Western Union or through e-Gold, an online digital currency.

Authorities say Carranza helped launder about $2.5 million in this way by operating as an e-Gold money exchanger. The mules would give him cash or deposit money into his bank account, and he would either transfer the money to the bank account of another e-Gold exchanger who would convert it to e-Gold for a carder, or he would change the money himself into e-Gold currency through his own e-Gold account, then transfer it to the e-Gold account of carders in East Europe and elsewhere. They would then use a local e-Gold money exchanger to convert the digital fund into their local currency.

One such mule who transmitted stolen money in this way described to Threat Level in 2006 how he obtained hundreds of stolen card numbers from Romanian phishers and Russian hackers that he met online. The man, who used the nickname “John Dillinger,” withdrew more than $150,000 from ATM machines before transferring the money back to East Europe through Western Union and through an e-Gold money exchanger in California.

In addition to laundering stolen funds, authorities say Carranza was a middleman for carders to purchase “dumps” (account and other data stored on a bank card’s magnetic stripe) from one another.

Around January 4, 2006, according to authorities, Carranza transferred about $15,000 worth of e-Gold to the e-Gold account of a carder who went by the nickname “CC-2″ — a known specialist in hacking financial databases and siphoning card data to sell to other criminals. Carranza indicated in a note to the transaction that he was retaining a 6-percent commission for the service. He transferred another $45,000 worth of e-Gold to CC-2’s account over the next two months. In March and April 2006, authorities say he also transferred $33,000 to Maksim Yastremskiy. The latter was arrested in Turkey in 2007 and sentenced to 30 years in prison there and is still wanted in the U.S. for his alleged role in the TJX carding ring.

Between 2003 and 2007, authorities say that more than $2 million went into and out of Carranza’s e-Gold account.

In 2006, e-Gold, under investigation for facilitating money laundering between carders, froze two of Carranza’s e-Gold accounts, which contained about $19,000 at the time. Carranza told Threat Level then that he was considering legal action against e-Gold to release his funds. “I no longer trust the e-gold integrity,” he said. He didn’t follow through on the threat.

He was indicted in 2008 on charges of conspiring to commit access device fraud and money laundering. He pleaded guilty last December to one count of conspiring to launder stolen money.

What makes a man want to amass more money than God, and once he has, keep going? For each hedge-fund manager the answers are a little bit different, and a little bit the same. From today's Bloomberg Markets we believe we have identified the four primary things that motivated Harbinger Capital founder Philip Falcone (or as readers of this blog may know him, Mr. Lisa Falcone), whose fund made $11 billion betting against subprime, to become who he is today.

We begin with a sepia-tinted moment when Falcone first leaves his Minnesota hometown, all gawky of limb and Lionel Richie of hair, to seek his fortune in the big city.

Neil Sheehy, from nearby International Falls, had offered Falcone a ride to Harvard University, which had recruited both of them to play hockey for the Crimson. The car stalled in front of Falcone’s house, and Sheehy had to restart it on a hill while Falcone’s mother and one of his sisters sobbed their goodbyes.

“It’ll be all right, Mrs. Falcone; it’ll be all right,” Sheehy recalls telling Caroline Falcone as the car chugged to life and headed east.

Falcone was one of nine, and his mother still cared that he was leaving home! This is meaningful and leads us to Motivation 1: Phil can never let his mama down.

[To wit, later: "Galloway says he once set up a meeting for Falcone with a billionaire investor who was interested in Harbinger. Falcone said he couldn’t make the meeting because he had to go see his mother."]

Immediately after leaving home, life decided to punk young Philip by showing him that even when you think that things are tough, they can always get worse.

Falcone rode to Cambridge, Massachusetts, with his feet on the dashboard because Sheehy had packed a skate-sharpening machine on the floor of the front seat... Halfway there, the roof liner came loose and showered the young men with fiberglass insulation that stuck to them as they sweated in the late.

Motivation 2: The fuck he's going to go through something like that again. He is going to kick life's ass!

Then, he did not quite fit in at school.

Falcone was wide-eyed when he arrived at Harvard in 1980, says hockey teammate Greg Olson, who’s now a dentist in Minnetonka, Minnesota. “He was a deer in the headlights,” Olson says. After recovering from the initial shock, Falcone made himself something of a campus don. Hockey teammates called him “Fashion Phil” because he cared so much about his clothes, Olson says. He had a blue, three-piece suit that he wore often, and he always wore stylish shoes.

Motivation 3: Show those jerkoffs who called him a hick and a fag who the man is.

But after graduation, he was more confident.

[Wife Lisa] was working as a model when she met Phil Falcone through mutual friends at a Manhattan restaurant in the late 1980s.

Motivation 4: GIRLS!

Of course, a hot wife and incredible financial success doesn't keep the critics at bay. If anything, it just makes them worse.

“Just because a manager got the subprime trade right, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a skilled manager,” says Brad Balter, managing partner of Balter Capital Management LLC, a Boston-based firm that invests in hedge funds for clients. “There have been several funds that benefited from that bet in 2007 whose performance was mediocre before and continues to be mediocre today.”

Motivation 5: Show those jerkoffs who suggest he is a one-hit wonder who the man is. Then show them again. And again. Until he dies.
